the Bible in 90 days - an update

Reading through the Bible in 90 days is probably the most difficult devotional challenge I have ever tried. I am very pleased to say that I am over halfway done with this challenge and learning more about God and His character than I ever have before! It is amazing how much better you understand books when you read them in a short amount of time. I know, that may sound like a duh! moment, but really. We read novels in a week or two flat, but for some reason we almost always read through the Bible in a year. granted, it is a much bigger (and sometimes less interesting) book, but it's still one book. And yes, I did say it is sometimes boring, because I just don't think I have ever heard of someone who absolutely loves to read the genealogies sections.

I'm currently reading in Jeremiah and should finish it within 3 days before moving on to Lamentations. I struggled through Isaiah, once even going back and rereading a section that I just really didn't read with my brain turned on, as my mom would say. I'm still not entirely sure what happened in all 66 chapters, but I'm not expecting to be able to comprehend everything on the first go. That's the beauty of the Word of God. There is always something more to learn.

I am looking forward to finishing in December and moving back into Bible study. I do miss being able to slowly absorb and concentrate on just a verse or short passage, but I also know that most verses will have so much more meaning if I can remember the context of the entire book, even on just a basic level. I also haven't been memorizing Scripture at all and I have been underlining verses as I come across them in my reading. There are many I'd like to know, and I have seen firsthand the pitiful amount that I have committed to memory!

I'll give another update once I have finished the plan, but I will say one last thing. If you are thinking of taking this challenge, you should really consider investing in a chronological Bible. I think that all of Scripture would be even more beneficial if we had the opportunity to see it all play out as God sees it!

The Sin of Doing Nothing

Recently, I spent some time in the book of Obadiah. It's one of the shorter books in the Bible, which is why I chose it. In my mind, I would have a better understanding of a book that I could read and study all the way through in one sitting. So, Obadiah it was. I must admit, I honestly didn't think I would learn much. HA! Little did I know. I can now appreciate the verse that says,  " All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,   that  the man of God may be complete,  equipped  for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17) All Scripture. Not just some of it, all of it, praise God! Even Obadiah. Obadiah was sent to tell the people of Edom (also known as Esau's descendants) that they messed up. Big time. When the descendants of Jacob needed help most, the Edomites stood by and watched the destruction happen. Scripture says "Edom was like one of the invaders". The s...

snow days, biking, and a new years resolution

Our snow days have kept us a little bored around here for the past week. We were able to have our first day of second semester, but then the winter storm hit, and the administration team decided to close until Monday. Which by the way, is going to be a packed day! Besides a regular day of school there is a 2 hour meeting to attend and 4 basketball games. Basically, we are enjoying the bit of down time before the rush of the next semester begins. The view from our back patio. So pretty! It was only about an inch and it's already melted almost completely. Before the winter storm, Daniel and I were able to give his Christmas present a try! I purchased a mountain bike for him and my parents gave us a bike rack so we can travel with our bikes. (I've had one since high school). We tried out a few trails at a park nearby and decided that we have found our new favorite hobby together.  Aren't the trails just beautiful? The weather being southern as always is goi...

#fortknoxgoestoJapan

Ever since we were dating, Daniel and I have been planning a trip to his hometown in Japan. We wanted to visit his parents, help out with their ministry some, and most of all, help me understand his family better by understanding and seeing the culture firsthand.  So, for our first year of marriage, we ate lots of hot dogs and boxed macaroni, spent very little on household items and drove his old college car, saving as much money as we could. Traveling is a passion we both share, so for the most part, it wasn't hard for us. Occasionally a shopping spree would happen, but even then, it was still mostly on things to use while on trips. Finally, the day came! Japan here we come! We spent 14+ hours on a plane, 12 of that straight flying from Toronto to Nartia. From Nartia airport, we took a bus for two hours to the closest station to Moroyama, and Daniel's parents picked us up from the bus stop to finally take us to their home. In total, it was 24 hours of traveling, including...
